Physiology of constipation

Physiology of constipation

Digestion starts from mouth and ends in stomach and large intestine. In this process, food is broken down into small and simple basic chemical substances. The basic substances such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins and water are absorbed by small intestine. Balanced material moves into large intestine and here water, alcohol, drugs like anesthetic agents and electrolytes etc. absorbed by large intestine. Finally large intestine forms feces and moves it into colon to defecation (voiding of feces).
Sometimes, digested material remains in large intestine due to lack of proper large intestine movement, leads to absorption of more water. So the feces become hard and dry, produce discomfort to movement and voiding of feces.
