           Many common plants are dangerous if eaten because they contain chemicals called phytotoxins. Some plant poisons are used in minute quantities to cure illnesses. Strangely some fruits and vegetables contains phytotoxins which harmful to animals, human beings and environment too.

        Seeds of some fruits contain cyanogenic glycosides. Apple is good for health if you take without seeds but an apple seeds are not sufficient to give effect in human body.


                       Fleshy segments of Sugar apple are tasty but the seeds and leaf contains toxicity. The seed contains 20-50% of oil. Even fresh oil’s vapor can damage our eyes permanently. In medical field, minute quantity of phytotoxin is used to cure some diseases. These phytotoxins are also used as bio-pesticides. 

Potatoes are safe to eat when cooked, but the stems and leaves of the plants contain a poison called solanine. If potatoes turn green, they may also contain solanine.

Ricin is extracted from the seeds of the castor oil plant and is more poisonous than cyanide/snake venom. Even minute doses of ricin can be fatal

Opium is extracted from the juice of a poppy and contains morphine. Small quantities of both are used legally as pain-relieving medicines and illegally as drugs. Both can easily cause death.

The death of cap is a highly poisonous mushroom. It is responsible for almost 90% of deaths from eating fungi. The poison causes severe diarrhea and vomiting.


        Curare is extracted from the bark of certain trees and is used by South American Indian tribes to tip their poison arrows when they go hunt.

Deadly nightshade is also known as belladonna. It contains a poison called atropine. Less than ten milligrams could kill a child.

        Nicotine is a yellow oily liquid found in tobacco. About 50 milligrams of nicotine would kill an adult within minute

        The leaves of the purple foxglove contain digitalis and eating just a few can be fatal. Digitalis is used in tiny doses to treat people suffering from heart disease.

Cassava is one of the top food plants with 203,863,208 tones yearly production. It consumed throughout the world for its starch. However, roots contain cyanogenic glycosides which are    cause severe effects to human, animal and then death. Proper processing is compulsory to avoid this poison.
